Thanks to a $14 million renovation, the 36-hole Bayonet and Black Horse Golf Courses offer the renowned level of complexity and beauty the discerning golfer craves. Golf course architect Gene Bates collaborated with Cypress Grove's partners to create a world-class golf experience, heightened by panoramic views.
Bates was able to bring the vision to life by carefully sculpting the spectacular mature cypress trees, thereby expanding the vistas of Monterey Bay from Pacific Grove to Santa Cruz. Golf enthusiasts knowledgeable about the area will be pleased to know Bates maintained the integrity of Bayonet's challenging layout while masterfully improving Black Horse with a complementary design.
The goal of the renovation was to realize a level of quality commensurate with the best and most storied courses on the Monterey Peninsula. This goal has been achieved. Dramatic alterations included hole routings, expanded corridors, optimized view sheds, addition of new tees, bunkers and green complexes. Equally impactful was the introduction of
T1 Bentgrass, known for its superb playability. The Bayonet and Black Horse facility is one of only two in the region to feature this playing surface from tee to green. In order to establish a distinct look, both Courses feature fescue rough that provides an unmistakable links-style feel.
"Bayonet and Black Horse are now complementary; both are challenging, aesthetically appealing and on level with each other," says Bates, who's worked on more than 150 projects worldwide during his illustrious golf design career. "However, the style of the greens and bunkers make the Courses distinctly different."
Bayonet has traditional deep, challenging bunkers, yet the greens are tamely contoured to reward both good shots and heroic recoveries alike. Bayonet's playability and strategic options have also been greatly enhanced.
On Black Horse, the bunkers are large with serrated edges and clustered to draw one's eye to them. The green surfaces have a lot more movement, as there is plenty of room off the tee and the bunkers are less severe. Black Horse's par 3, 15th hole, created during the renovation, faces the Bay and is sure to emerge as one of the great holes on the Monterey Peninsula.
At Cypress Grove, we are excited to introduce golfers to the new look of the Bayonet and Black Horse Golf Courses. The comprehensive enhancements are staggering and golfers will discover two challenging, fair, strategic and well-conditioned layouts that have rapidly emerged as "Must Play" Courses on the Monterey Peninsula.
The Golf Channel called it "one of the most impressive redesigns you'll ever see."
Built in the 1950s by the military and designed by U.S. Army Gen. Robert B. McClure, these nationally coveted Courses have hosted numerous PGA Tour, Nationwide and Champions tour events.
